Chicken Chops @ Amigo’s

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Final exam’s on next week, so I will be taking a break from foodie and cooking adventures in the meantime. Trust me it is hard to eat for the sake of filling the stomach and nothing else, so after the exam I hope I ave something new to post up.

In the meantime I hope you will enjoy these decent photos from my food photo archive. These photos were taken sometime back in Amigo’s. I am sure if you stay long enough in Malacca you will know this place. This eatery is a famous grill and chop place in Melaka Raya, along the row of Red Square karaoke.

mushroom soup

I like this. Their mushroom soup is something out of ordinary, and definitely not canned soup-ish.

black pepper chicken chop

mushroom chicken chop

Black pepper chicken chop and mushroom chicken chop. Two of the most ordered chicken chops when I used to hang out there with all my ex-house mates.

You can’t tell but from the pictures but this place is quite busy. My ex-house mates usually haunt this place in the weekends, and so did the weekend dinner crowd.

Genki’s Surprise

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

No, no, the place wasn’t called Genki’s surprise, but instead, it was Genki’s Kitchen, although they did surprise me to a certain degree when I was there yesterday.

Initially I wanted to dine in somewhere else, but it was closed, so I made a few rounds to find another place for dinner, and decide to step into Genki’s Kitchen. Genki means healthy in Japs, so the food must be pretty healthy, I guess.

Imagine me, alone, stepping into an empty restaurant, only to be greeted by four burly male waiters. -.-||. I felt so intimidated, alright.

From the menu, the restaurant serves mainly simple Japanese dishes, as well as fusion Japanese dishes and some Western snacks.

kappa maki

My appetizer, kappa maki. Upon placing my order, half of the burly waiters disappeared, into what I believe is the kitchen. Aha! So, they cooked the meals too. I was surprised, and skeptical too.

set dinner

Tadaa! My set meal, pork ribs king rice with soup. Initially I had wanted to order just the rice itself, but my waiter recommended the more value for money set meal, which includes the rice, miso soup, a choice of iced coffee/tea and ice cream dessert for RM6.80.

pork ribs king rice

Upclose. I must say, they are very colourful, and healthy too. The rice and dishes were cooked with minimal amount of oil. I find that the meat is a bit dried to my liking, but the taste made up for it. This kind of lives up the name of the restaurant, heh.

ice cream

My dessert, only about the most unhealthy stuff on the table. For all the food above the bill comes in less than RM10.00 inclusive of service tax. Pretty much affordable, I would say, although it was quite intimidating. Even though it was dinner time the place was quite empty, likely owing to the fact that it was tucked in the more secluded corner of Melaka Raya, the row opposite Red Square Karaoke. What a pity.

Heng Kee’s Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

One of the famous delicacy in Malacca that I’ve not quite accustomed to eating is their beloved chicken rice balls. Having grown up eating chicken rice where the rice is literally fluffy and and the grains could be seen separately, rice balls and chicken seems quite alien. With some exception - when they actually taste very good.

The one of only chicken rice ball shop that I frequent has to be Heng Kee’s Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls. Located along Melaka Raya and a little bit further from Tangkak Beef Soup Noodles, this shop serves decent chicken rice balls along with succulent white cut chicken or roast chicken, nutritious black bean soup and lotus root soup, Shanghai cabbages and assam fish.

chilli sauce

The secret to delicious chicken rice lies within the strength of its chilli sauce, and needless to say, their chilli sauce is real good. I bet the layer of fat comes from the boiled chicken soup.

chicken

Of course, what is chicken rice without my favourite tender, succulent white cut chicken?

riceballs

Very aromatic rice balls. I thought it was fishballs the first time I saw them. Still not so used to it though. I always order fluffy rice instead.

fish

They also serve assam fish along with their chicken rice fare. My advice is, don’t order unless you are really curious about it though.

I’ve been passing through Melaka Raya more often lately and chanced upon having them as lunch. Hence I digged out these old pictures from the archive to make a post of it. From what I’ve seen plastered on their wall, Heng Kee has been voted by Guang Ming Daily as “King of Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls”. Way to go!

Tangkak Beef Soup Noodle

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

If you are looking for something to eat in Melaka Raya, check out for this Restoran Sup Lembu Tangkak on the right side of the road. They are very famous for their beef soup noodle, and you can see a lot of newspaper features about them hanging in the walls of the restaurant.

beef soup noodles

I happened to be going pass Melaka Raya the other day, so I decided to stop and savour a bowl of hot and hearty beef noodle soup. This is how they serve the noodles - in mild herbal soup along with beef slices and tripe, garnished with chopped spring onions and a dash of fried onion oil.

Remember to eat with lotsa special chilli sauce, and a drop of white vinegar or two for the extra kick!

Dae Jang Gum

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Anyo haseyo! This time round I am posting up some pictures taken while dining in Dae Jang Gum. These were taken a month or two back, right after final exams. I’ve been passing by this place every time in Melaka Raya, so the itch to try it out was great.

Anyone who watches the popular Korean series Jewel in The Palace will know the mascot of this place, Da Chang Jin.

towel

The idea of eating Korean food is still quite new to me. *Wipe hands with towel*

bbq pork

We opted for pork, on the safe side, and the waitress came to cook the meat for us all thoroughly. How disappointing. I thought I could play a bit, but never mind.

vege

Fresh lettuce.

beancurd soup

Spicy bean curd soup. I love them hot and spicy!

side dishes

A table full of side dishes, all refillable. Here are some close up shots of the side dishes.

anchovies and peanut

Fried anchovies and peanut.

cockles

Cockles.

egg

Braised eggs.

sprouts

Bean sprouts.

chili garlic

Green chili cuts and garlic.

salt and bean paste

Salt and bean paste dippings.

ambience

It was good experience, even when we have some communication problem with the server. Price is on the expensive side though, and the place is kinda empty when we were there, which is on a weekday dinnertime.
