Penang Asam Laksa in front of Kek Lok Si

kek lok si

Kek Lok Si temple, on a cloudy day.

I believe this famous Air Hitam asam laksa (or assam laksa?) needs no introduction. Do not be fooled by the not so appetizing look of the colour, the goopy mashed fish in floating in the bowl and the not so appealing setting of the stall. This is good! Look at this bowl of humble asam laksa:

asam laksa

This asam laksa embodies what a good bowl of asam laksa is, to my standard: (1) just the right sourness, (2) just the right spiciness, (3) right balance of fish, vegetables and noodles, (4) portion small enough to ask for more!

durians

We were in Penang just in time for the durian seasons. These Balik Pulau durians are awesome! We easily finished two in no time at all.

We also got struck by the tourist bug and bought some nutmeg balms, oils and preserved nutmegs as souvenirs. That’s my sis, posing again in front of the Cheong Kim Chuan local products shop, en route to Kek Lok Si.
